Why We Grieve The Loss of a Celebrity

Having a parasocial relationship can be weird, especially with a celebrity. When a public figure passes it can bring up complicated emotions like sadness, confusion, and anger.

Often times in therapy sessions I hear things like:
- “I feel dumb for being sad. I didn’t even know them.”
- “Their passing affecting me more than I expected.”
- “Seeing all the posts about them has really thrown off my mental health.”

Just know, you don’t need to know someone personally to feel their loss. It’s normal to grieve a person you don’t have a relationship with. Read this post to learn why mourning the loss of a celebrity can sometimes take a toll on our mental health.

Celebrities evoke emotions

Seeing someone regularly on TV, online, or in the media can create a sense of familiarity, even when the relationship is one-sided. Over time, we can develop genuine feelings of attachment toward them, especially as they share parts of their lives publicly.

This can create a sense of connection and evoke both positive and negative emotions, even though we don’t personally know them. This is called a parasocial relationship.

Celebrities provide nostalgia

Their work can become connected to our memories, reminding us of specific people, moments, or chapters of our lives. Over time, these memories can provide us with comfort, especially when they are tied to a happy season of our lives. When they die, we mourn more than the person. We’re mourning an era of our lives or a specific version of ourselves.

Celebrities represent parts of us

Whether through their music, performances, charitable work, or shared life experiences, we can find ourselves relating to celebs. Their work can reflect our own values, beliefs, personality, interests, etc. creating a sense of community even without a personal relationship. Over time, that can make their lives and deaths feel more personal.

Celebrity deaths reminds us of mortality

Celebrities can sometimes feel untouchable. Losing someone we recognize can remind us that death can happen to anyone. It can make us think about our own mortality, the fragility of life, and even how we might die. Their death may also lead us to reflect on our own lives. We think deeper about relationships, goals, the future, and the kind of life we want to live.

Unrelated Grief Can Surface

A celebrity’s death can sometimes bring up grief from losses we have experienced in our own lives. Their death may unexpectedly reopen feelings that seem unrelated, such as the loss of someone we personally knew, unprocessed grief, or difficult circumstances in our current lives. Seeing millions of other people grieve can also validate and amplify these emotions, making them feel even more intense.

How we can mourn + reflect

  • Consume their work like movies, music, books, etc.

  • Write a letter telling them how they impacted your life.

  • Find a community of people who share the loss.

  • Why did I admire this person? How can I carry that with me?

  • In what ways can I carry on the legacy of their work in my life?

  • How does death affect how I want to live my life now?

Just because we don’t know someone personally doesn’t mean their death matters less.
